About the Journal

Read the paperwork before you sign for nerve pain care

Consent forms and coverage terms, read line by line for Passaic readers.

Mark every sentence you cannot restate, then ask the office what it means.

A busy Passaic street with a bus, crosswalk pedestrians and storefronts.

Picture the last line of a consent form: "I have read and understood the above." It takes a second to sign, and it is easy to sign before you have finished the page above it. If you have been offered an injection or told you have nerve damage, that line may already be waiting for your signature.

Nerve pain, epidural injections and the knee

Nerve pain and neuropathy, epidural steroid injections and the knee joint each have a hub, with articles sorted by the claim or clause they take up. For the general vocabulary a pain clinic's paperwork borrows, an overview of pain management is a place to look terms up.

Who writes the articles

We weigh what a form says against what you were told, and we leave the sales pitch out of it. Which treatment to choose is a decision for you and your doctor. If your forms mention a physiatrist, a short explainer on what a physiatrist is defines the title. If your procedure is booked with Metro Pain Centers, that office is the one to ask for its consent and coverage forms before the day arrives.

Passaic and the state rules

If you are in Passaic with paperwork and a signature line in front of you, the state health department homepage is a place to start for anything that turns on state rules.

When a form lands in your hands

Ask for the consent form and any coverage terms in writing before the day of the visit. Read them at home with a pen, and mark every sentence you cannot restate in your own words. Then take those marked sentences back to the office and ask what each one means.

Check the procedure name first. If the name on the form differs from the name your doctor used, ask which one applies.

The clause you do not understand is the one to ask about first.
